August '09: A
critical time for Health Care Reform
Health
Care is not just an issue...it's a Faith
issue
As
Congress goes into recess without a resolution on
national health care reform, August becomes a key month
for education and advocacy efforts. Look for an update
from LAMPa each week about what you can do to help make
health care reform a reality this year!
LAMPa's "Faith-inspired Vision of Health
Care" website has
just been updated with the third
installment of three new resources (newsletter
article, bulletin insert, and promotional summary) in
our five part summer series. This month's resources are
centered around the second of four faith inspired reform
principles: Accessibility.
(Other principles include Affordability,
Accountability, and Inclusivity (see the May 29 original
announcement below).
It's
NOT too late to start using these resources in your
congregation! Instead of using one per month, try
one each week!
Resources for the third and fourth principles will be
posted by Tuesday, August 25.
In addition to the
ELCA Congregational Toolkits developed by the ELCA
Washington Office, we've also
added a
short ecumenical guide developed by Sojourners and
PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing)
to the site. These resources will give you step by step
instructions for turning your coffee hour, adult forum,
or even worship into a "Health Care Sunday".
Additionally, you can download a flyer from the
LAMPa health care page (directly underneath the
toolkit link) that outlines the ELCA's top health care
reform priorities - an excellent resource that
can easily be printed and posted on bulletin boards,
included in your next congregational newsletter, or
forwarded as an e-mail attachment.
Remember,
our goal is to flood the offices of Senators Casey and
Specter (as well as the offices of the 19 members of
Congress!) with personal letters about the need for
reform based on the four faith principles. Now
is the time! Sample letters can also be
downloaded from
LAMPa's health care page. These letters should be
mailed to one of the District
offices, NOT their Washington D.C. office.
To find
contact information for your member of Congress enter
your zip code on the LAMPa homepage (www.lamp.org).
During August all members are in the district on recess,
so be sure to check their websites - or sign up to
receive their e-newsletter - to find out if they are
holding any special events where you could express your
support for Health Care Reform.
Coming
up Next Week: LAMPa Director Amy Reumann's
reflection entitled "Getting Clear on Faithful Health
Care Reform".

Announcement!
Health Care is not just an
issue...it's
a Faith issue
This Summer, LAMPa is
partnering with the
PA Health Access
Network (PHAN) and the
PA Council of Churches
Ministry of Public Advocacy
to help educate our congregation members that NOW
is the time to raise their important voice in the
national debate around Health Care Reform.
Follow
this link to go to LAMPa's
Faith Inspired Vision of Health Care page where you
can download a newsletter article, bulletin insert, and
promotional blurb that will help educate members
of faith communities on four important principles of
Health Care Reform: Affordability,
Accessibility, Accountability, and
Inclusivity.
This
month's materials are designed as an introduction to our
Faithful Reform campaign. Look for new materials each
month throughout the summer! Our goal is to flood the
offices of Senators Casey and Specter with personal
letters about the need for reform based on the above
principles. Sample letters can be downloaded from our
website.
Also
helpful is the ELCA's Social Statement on Health Care
"Our Shared Endeavor". Go to the ELCA homepage (www.elca.org)
